I don't have to watch the video on the link you provided to know that there's a great deal of merit to the argument. The past decade of consumer computer technology alone is a living testament to planned obsolescence driven by software companies. Same can be said of automobiles, appliances, and anything else mechanical. The more complex a device, the more prone it is to failure, the more expensive it becomes to repair it versus replacing it.
I could talk hours about this subject and how the various market forces, quality of workmanship, design, etc. all comes together to cause the situation, but this is /tech/, not a lecture hall.
