Don't be a pompous git , it's more of a tech related question than a "Halp my computers got a virus!" question, which is what the sticky really was meant to keep out.

It probably won't work at first, and you may struggle to get it working at all. Furthermore, if you want to try this, perhaps you should pirate a copy of OS-X or hackintosh to see if it works. If not then you haven't wasted your dollars, and if it does work, and you feel guilty that Steve Jobs is going to bed hungry at night because you didn't pay for his product, then you can buy it.

If you do get it working, you will need to be very careful to never update directly from apple (unless you managed to do a "vanilla" install, which means you have installed OSX from the store-bought DVD directly over the patched Darwin kernel). In almost all cases, you will have reduced graphics performance, and usually sound, wifi, cameras and the like will not work right "out of the box". Get ready for a long and more-than-somewhat frustrating process.
If you are still interested, http://www.osx86project.org and http://www.insanelymac.com are good places to begin. Start by looking up your hardware and checking compatibility, and then make the choice over the patching method.

hay, i would like to know what to look for in a smart phone. what are some of your favorite parts of smart phones and what are your turnoffs?

plus could i get a list of your favorite smart phones?
>> No. 5583
Packing a ton of features into a phone just makes it a chore to use a phone for what it is for- calling people. Drains the battery and keeps 'em hot, too. Normally the build quality is dreadful, as well.

Personally the only smartphones I will ever consider are the Nokia N series phones, or maybe the E series. I've heard too much shit about othe rmakers to even think twice about them.

Motorola seems to be doing much better than what they were up too, but most smart phones (including that apple piece of hipster shit) are just money making pieces of shit.

tl;dr: Buy a 'normal' telephone, use something like a Zune HD or Archos 5 to get the media and advanced internet capability done.

I've got nothing else to do with these eight gigabytes of RAM. May as well feed some of it to the fox.

Plus it's simple, easy to customize, doesn't ever let me down and it doesn't spy on me, except for when it does.

http://www.storyofstuff.com/film.php

There is a portion of this film that deals with planned obsolescence, using computers as an example. Planned obsolescence is that products are designed to become outdated quickly, to increase consumption.
Watch the portion of the film that addresses this and tell me if it has any merit, please.
>> No. 5586
I don't have to watch the video on the link you provided to know that there's a great deal of merit to the argument. The past decade of consumer computer technology alone is a living testament to planned obsolescence driven by software companies. Same can be said of automobiles, appliances, and anything else mechanical. The more complex a device, the more prone it is to failure, the more expensive it becomes to repair it versus replacing it.

I could talk hours about this subject and how the various market forces, quality of workmanship, design, etc. all comes together to cause the situation, but this is /tech/, not a lecture hall.

Asking others to help you break the law is conspiracy to commit piracy, ten years in a federal prison.

Bend over, citizen!

Sup bros,

So, I'm looking to buy a laptop that's durable (I use public transit often) with a long lasting battery, and if possible that runs decently (well enough for web browsing text processing and MAYBE run a game or two but gaming is not necessary)

Any got suggestions?!?!??!?!?!?
>> No. 5579
If you're willing to sacrifice a little extra $ for quality, you can't go past Lenovo. Other than that, HP or Dell. Don't get a Toshiba for Christs sake.

You want one with 2GB ram, windows 7, perhaps something like a T6600 CPU, maybe a 13" screen, and a low end video card, maybe a 256mb discrete.
>> No. 5580
Lenovo X or T series is your best bet.

HP's old 'p' bracket of high durabilty computers might be good to look into. For christ sake don't get a netbook.

Dear /tech/:
What music player do you use? and why?

<--- uses foobar2000 because of many reasons, most important being its library support.

I use foobar on windows, but I can't find a good equivalent for kubuntu.

ITT: Security.

I am now(brace yourself) running both Commodo Anitvirus and Avira Antivirus. If two screeners wasn't enough I run my internet browser(s) through Sandboxie. My personal dox are in a virtual truecrypt drive guarded by a randomly generated(all kinds of shit) KeePass password.

SO AM I FUCKING SAFE YET? Can the government/hack0rz ever get my dox?

I think not. Not whilst I am in my castle.

>>5390 Ah, the encrtytion or whatever is serpenttwofish and I do use noscript. I was drunk as hell when I made this post lol

I just started using trucrypt and keepass, I really haven't gotten acquainted with it yet.

I am considering deleting my antivirus programs and just using noscript, adblock, and sandboxie. I run two antiviruses b/c I have legendary skills at destroying computers and better safe than sorry, but it would free up so much of my systems resources.

just throwing this out there...

my dad has a single CD that he puts into your computer and on boot-up it boots off of it and he can read and decrypt everything you think would be safe. Saying he doesn't work for the government I am pretty sure they could do it even easier.
