In my experience, a fair bit. I do a relatively formal and traditional style, so there is a fair bit of focus on kata and bunkai etc. and not everything is done with a focus towards kumite, but that said we still do plenty of kumite and practice for it. Rules in my club and others in the same organisation for free sparring are, no contact to the head (backhands are acceptable), no strikes to the groin, knees or toes/foot. 'Bout it really, though how hard we go rather depends on who you're sparring, with blackbelts/dans I just try not to break their ribs, with lower belts I utilise more control and am gentler.

Grading varies by organisation I'd assume. As does kata. The Goju-Kai guys do slightly different kata to the JKF Goju guys. And this is without going into regional/club level variation. I've not yet taken the 3/2 Kyu grading yet (May apparently is when I'm expected to) however, just of the top of my head I'd be expected to perform Sanchin, Tensho (both breathing kata), Taikyoku Jodan (possibly Chudan and the rest as well), Gekisai dai ichi and ni, Saifa and Seiunchin. Bunkai would be Gekisai dai ichi and Saifa. Good kumite as well. This is only off the top of my head, more would be involved.

Best way to do this is just to find a good instructor then show up.

That said, I don't see why you wouldn't practice all the kata you know.

I'm rusty, but working to get back into the swing before taking the test right when I get back at the end of April.

I wanted to ask if anyone else has taken Goju, and what the kata are usually for the brown belt test. Sanchin? Sai Fa? I've forgotten over the time I've been away, and would like to get back up to scratch. Also, what do you guys practice on your days off? Thank you.

From what I heard Tai Chi is probably the top most McDojoed art, rivaling Karate. People are right, you can't just learn it in a bit and start seriously teaching it. No problem in giving people a few pointers you thoroughly understand, but that's pretty much the limit.

I've been studying Tai Chi for two years now, and Shuai Jiao (sort of an external Tai Chi in a sense) for four years. While I may understand things pretty well, I'm far from seriously teaching. One of my Tai Chi mentors explained it this way: With internal martial arts, you need to be given the ignition. And what he meant by ignition, is putting your hand against the body of someone while they perform internal movements and feel that movement. Only then will you begin really learning.

At least in the systema school I go to. It's all about learning not to use strength against strength, learning how a body moves and reacts to different things, learning to react spontaneously to a threat and learning timing, distance and other basic things. The one biggest difference I find between Systema and other MAs I've done is the training method. In systema we don't generally try to learn specific techniques. Instead we try different things and see if they work. At first slowly and then increase the speed.
