A lot of people die because of a fire? Make a smoke detector mandatory. A safety belt reduces the number of casualties in traffic? Also make it mandatory. I mean, what the fuck? You're already sitting, what's bothering you so much about the belt?
People fail to raise their children? Give them guidelines so their children don't grow up to be criminals or bums.
I mean, this is all pretty much common sense? Personal freedom does not mean you can never be pragmatic. You're being hysterical.
Also, I highly doubt socialized medicine will make the government tell you who to have sex with and how many children to have. If you look at europe, you'll see you're being hysterical again.

tl;dr you're being hysterical. mandatory seatbelts and smoke detectors are not killing your freedom.

It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters."

- Daniel Webster

"Are we at last brought to such an humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our own defense? Where is the difference between having our arms under our own possesion and under our own direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?"

- Patrick Henry

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Our ancestors came to this country to get away from kings and theocracies that told them how to live there lives. We now live in a country where farmers are told what to plant and how much to charge for it, corporations are told what they can make and how they can make it, banks are told who they can loan to, insurance companies are given a list of mandatory add-ons they must put with every policy, and all employers are told how much and what benefits they must give their employees. Then we wonder why they head overseas.

As citizens we are told how we must secure our own private property (smoke detectors?), how to protect and discipline our children, how to raise our children, wear our seatbelts, bike helmets when riding a bicycle, motorcycle helmets when riding a motorcycle, when we can fish, where we can hunt and for what, where we can and cannot practice our religion, where our children are or are not allowed to bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and how much of our income we must give to the government for their indentured poverty programs.

Obama is now pushing for the government to gain total say over how we purchase our healthcare, which will give them the door to intrude on what we eat, whether or not we choose to exercise, how much TV we watch, who we have sex with and by what method, how many children we have, and how long we can live.
I'm not some whacked out right wing conspiracy theorist, but I am no longer willing to trade little bits and pieces of my freedom and the freedom of my children to a government that thinks it knows what's best for me.

>>18390

Well, no- the USA is not a democracy. We don't have the capabilities of being a democracy. A democracy is (IMO) really a collective of opinions brought together, and decisions made based on compromise. Everyone has ideas, but in the end the ideas are either combined or filtered out to get a result. Our republic system makes it so that a collective of individuals far smaller than the general population makes decisions for us; this is made to be efficient in my opinion. Inevitably, this leads the collective to drop some ideas of the general populace either by ignorance, the furthering of its own agenda, or to drop it because it does not work. The last option keeps it to be a democracy if it were to happen, but the former two happen far more often. People get a vote, but the ideas inevitably lie with the collective. I'm sounding more like a conspiracy nut, but I believe that we are closer to an oligarchy with the populace believing that it has a vote. Many ideas are ignored or missed because the populace is too large to efficiently hear ideas from. Therefore, it denies the possibilities of a "true" democracy, if that makes sense at all. It's probably just rambling, as I am not very good at this game. Just my two cents I guess.

So, no, we aren't a democracy *yet* because we simply don't have the capabilities of holding a true democracy, and because humans tend to be after their own asses today.

Call bullshit if you like. Just helps me get smarter or more afraid to post. Win win.

For example, 5 grams of crack cocaine which has a street value of around $125 gets you a mandatory 5 year prison sentence while it takes 500 grams of power cocaine worth $50,000 to get you the same sentence. New memetic infusion from generations of development caused frictions with older memes, but memetic conflicts were usually deferred until a later time. When individuals can satisfy their material needs, they tend to ignore their social needs and their spiritual needs. When a higher standard of living cannot be achieved through expansion of the society, discontent grows in the society from failure to meet ever higher material expectations. This bring memetic conflicts to the forefront of the society.

Technology determine the population density of a society. Population density affects the type of social structure individual forms with each other. Religion, as a system of memes, governs the expectations and behaviors of individuals within a society. As technology develops, new insight about the nature of the universe is gained and new social structure is formed. The newer social norms and knowledge base from the network effect of higher population density will be different from their older counterpart memes. This is the cause of the eternal periodic conflicts between rural and urban population.

Religion also serve to bring identity to the population. Memes are interested in self replication. Education is an institutionalized construct where a society decides which memes get preference in passing on to future generations. This naturally translate into a power struggle between various memetic sets for the control of the propagation of memes. If older memes lost, the newer memes infects the remaining population in the society. Memes with higher utility for the population will propagate without the need of an institutionalized construct.

>Seriously, wha'ts the point of this argument in the first place?
There does not have to be a point.
