1) There isn't a hoard of modern BSD derivatives to choose from like there is like Linux distributions. There's pretty much just 3 or 4 big open source ones to choose from. FreeBSD is fine.
2) They're all "lightweight."
3) What do you mean by "It must come with A GUI because I don't feel like compiling everything from source?" That makes little sense. How does not having a GUI installer mean you have to compile stuff from source?

Programs for cross-platform file transfer... well SSH is always a good one. Just use Putty for Windows and you're good. Hell you could even use HTTP.

I have a shitty ass computer that I'm not allowed to get internet access on that I would like to install a lightweight version of BSD on. It must come with A GUI because I don't feel like compiling everything from source and I'm going to have to format the computer when I'm done with it anyway.


I'd also like some ideas about applications that are cross-platform(windows, Linux, BSD) that can work across a small network of five computers without accessing the internet. Applications Such as FTP, IRC, Samba, Email and shit like that which don't have to access the internet. Ideas would be appreciated. In b4 2 long didn't read

There is always something that gives better compression. I'm just going to use tarballs until there is an algorithm that will reduce all data to a single 1 or 0.

Also, OP, i suggest you find out what all the words in unix mean, as it will tell you what that thing actually does. I imagine there are a few others you may be confused about.
