ok, i'm a little confused. what is the reason to compile from source if a package is already built for you to use? i've heard that doing this optimizes the app specifically for your setup. is this something that just the act of compiling does on it's own? or do you adjust some kind of parameters when compiling so that the build is optimized for your setup (cpu, etc)?

Welcome to /nix/. This board is for discussion of open source software in general, not just operating systems, so feel free to talk about cool apps you've found / bitch about portage / brag about your xmoto skills.

Rules:
1 - Distro wars shall be kept to a single thread. It is, however, okay to make a new thread about why you love distro x; just don't make it all about why it's better than distro y. Violating this rule results in thread deletion and a 1 week ban.

2 - No malicious software. Uploading such will result in a permanent ban from all boards.

3 - Get on IRC. irc.99chan.org:6667 #unix

Anybody dual boot Linux & hackintosh OS X? I am making a PC to use as my Linux box, but am willing to get Hackintosh compatible parts. I know Windows / OS X seems more common from reading articles.

Is this complicated, should I go and spend a few weeks at the Hackinstosh forums? I'm a linux noob and use training wheel equiped Ubuntu for now. Should I just stick with learning Linux and not get in over my head.
>> No. 1501
Getting in over your head is what linux is all about. If you have the computer to spare, i say go for it. It never hurts to learn something.

Sure. I have Slackware and Kalyway (OSX) on one of my PCs.

It's a very simple process, but make sure you do read the forums of course first. Check which parts will suit you for networking and so on.

Where do you guys go for *nix hosting, and how much do you pay?

I'm looking for SSH tunneling, but info on web hosts is fine too.

If you just want a simple shell account you can try the free service at freeshell.org. They also have pay services too.

I'm a huge fan of www.x10hosting.com

They have affordable VPS plans if you want the full experience. The "regular" hosting plans all come with SSH (if I'm not mistaken, I pay $10 a month for mine) and come with a couple of the standards covered (Perl, SQL (who doesn't have SQL these days), CGI, Python, etc.).

Plus, if you suck at life, they have good tech support.

OVH is the best place to go for nice servers in my opinion.

As for SSH tunneling, it depends what you want to do with it. You could just get a free shell somewhere if that's all you want to do.

Sucks to be you. I've managed to generate 3,800.00 bitcoins so far. Is anyone else managing to get this much or more? I'm curious how common the coins will be.

>I'm curious how common the coins will be.
The current exchange rate for 1 greenback is around 809.22 bitcoin.

We're basically "minting" computing cycles into bitcoin and the mining costs of computing cycles is bound by electricity rate. It's similar to "minting" graphite (carbon) into cultured diamond (carbon) in controlled explosion.
>> No. 1507
>>1505
I understand the theory behind all of this. However, that does not tell us the distribution. For instance, one fellow here has been unable to generate any coins, but I have had no trouble at all. Does this mean on some individuals will be able to mint, leaving others to seek employment from the minters to have any money? In our new world where real currency no longer exists this gent is at a disadvantage and I am at an advantage. He must come to be for help. Granted this is no different then current reality and this whole thing may simply be a way to move power into the hands of computer people and hackers.

I'm looking for a stable Webkit browser that compiles on 64bit linux (it'd be nice if it ran on on 32bit FreeBSD, but that's not a requirement), extra points if it happens to be in the arch repos.
-There's midori, but it's very unstable.
-There's Arora, but it's Qt, I want Gtk.
-There's Chrome, but I don't like the Google part of Google chrome, and so far I don't know of a Chromium fork that has all the Google tracking stuff scrapped that compiles on 64bit linux.
-There's uzbl, but well, it's uzbl.
Thanks in advance.

I'm still lurking around.

Yeah, I know about the engine switch in Epiphany, I haven't tried it though.
I've been using Arora for a while, even though it's qt. I must say that it's pretty neat, way less buggy than midori.

Hello /b/

I apologize in advance for a very stupid question.

I just got ubuntu 7.10 up and running on my PS3.
i'm a complete linux n00b.
i know 7.10 is an old version, but its the only version i had pre-burned. my computer is borked ATM, the whole reason im using linux.

i want to install firefox 3.5, i've extracted the contents of the archive and now have a folder called firefox, which looks as it would on a windows install, but i cant seem to figure out how to install/run it.

swiftweasel is a whole different bag of potatoes. As I remember swiftweasel comes pre-compiled and all you have to do is run the installer. Read the documentation and you might actually be able to install it lol

Also why the fuck did you tell us that you wanted to install firefox then?
>> No. 1496
also, I found a couple of links that you might find useful if you go with firefox and not swiftfox

Haven't used the actual copy, but early beta builds and the RC copies weren't too bad. Didn't run CSS or TF2 fast enough for my tastes, but I have a bad video card. So in other words, if you like XP, it's worth a try.
>> No. 1493

I'm running it instead of ubuntu. it has a couple of nice touches, but nothing really special.

I was about to say that it has a great selection of wallpapers included, but then again -so does Ubuntu 09.10...

I tried it out. I agree, nothing special. I'm gonna just stick with XP for my TF2 and other couple of computer games.

And for wallpapers I go to /w/ :)

I had been running Arch Linux with OpenBox as my WM for a while, and I didn't really have any problems that I couldn't resolve, I think.

However, lately I've been bored with arch (though it does what I want and it does it right) and wanted to use one of those corporate-backed distros where everything is preconfigured with pretty themes and all that. Like Ubuntu or Fedora and the likes. Yeah, it's weird, I'm not sure why I want it either, meh.

I installed Fedora, because if I'm going to bother playing around with SELinux and such, I thought Fedora would be the best thing to use. And I don't like it. I'm having problems that I didn't have in Arch, ie problems with some games I wanted to run (one of them on wine), and some other stuff that I can't recall. Fuck, I'm not feeling very well, maybe I need to sleep more. Do you know what I mean?

Plus, it doesn't even do its job right as a "aww, so bloated, but so pretty!" OS. On bootup I just get a black screen with a blue/white bar at the bottom of the screen that loads until Xorg/GDM kicks in. I liked my arch bootup better :|

So um, anyway, what "aww, so bloated, but so pretty!" distro do you recommend?

You know, I think that I should try a KDE distro.*

*Before someone says "you can use any DE/WM on any distro, you silly goose!": I know, but I think that for bloated corporate-backed pretty preconfigured systems, it's best to use the default DE they work with.
