Viruses, Malware and Spyware. A guide to diagnosing, removing, and avoiding them, written with beginners in mind. All software and resources cited here are free and legal.

Think you have a virus?

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
HijackThis is a program that lists important items from your registry, making it much easier to diagnose whether or not you have an infection of some kind. If you can't make heads or tails of the output, you can put each process or registry item into google and see what kind of description and reputation it has. If you are still not sure, you can go to:
http://spywarewarrior.com/index.php
It's a forum dedicated to helping people rid their computers of spyware and other nasties. One of the subforums allows you to post your HijackThis log, and eventually one of the helpers will review it and give you advice on what to do.

Want to get rid of a virus?

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free program that you can use to scan your data for viruses. It's a pretty effective tool.

There's to ways to go about this. One is to boot into safe mode, then run a scan from a portable antivirus on a USB key or CD.

ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe

Alternatively, you could booting into a Live CD with antivirus tools.

I'm using a DJing program I just installed called Traktor. My problem is that it wont make any sound at all but my computer isn't having problems making sound with any other program. I have no idea why this is happening. It might be something wrong with my soundcard, I dunno.
Please Help /india/, I want to start DJ'ing soon.

Some popup box came up (I vaguely believe it had some yellow icon on it) while I was on internet explorer.

I had firefox, a word document and a folder open as well.

The thing is, I accidently pressed enter while I was typing something and it pressed the default for that popup!

What did you popup say?
how can I find out!
>> No. 9300
I'm pretty sure you cant.

also I picked out a new case, but I don't think that is to very important to post.

Also, I ditched that fan+heatsink for this: (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010)

Also upgraded my PSU for a few more watts (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371009)

Ok So I got myself an IDE/SATA USB cable, but windows 7 wont recognize any of the HD's I connect.

When I plugged in the USB wire alone, it said device installed successfully, but when I plug in the power wire to the HD and attach the IDE jack to the HD nothing happens.

I've already configured the Jumpers on the two IDE drives for cable select settings as directed by the HD's itself,

I'm gonna try it on my XP machine tommorrow and post my results then to see if it's just 7 related.

Pic is basically what i got.

yes i hear it spinning, also it's not appearing on my XP machine either.

It was rrunning fine when I took it out of the original rig i had but now it's just being lame.

Sounds like a shitty converter then.

IDE Drives need two USB connections, they use power than their SATA equivalents. My IDE drive that I got for $3 from china came with the correct cable, but yours didn't?

I've been having a problem with a high pitched sound emitting from my PSU and, well, it's starting to drive me insane. I took a tip and installed SpeedFan, and I'm getting these readings:
Vcore1: 1.26V
Vcore2: 0.00V
+3.3V: 3.33V
+5V: 4.95V
+12V: 12.80V
-12V: -8.82V
-5V: -8.78V
+5V: 4.95V
Vbat: 3.28V
Now, I know close to nothing when it comes to PSUs, but that +12V rail really doesn't look normal. Any way to fix this (and hopefully fix the noise)?
PSU is a Cooler Master Elite Power 460W

You running your system off a UPS by chance, OP? If so, does it quit if it's plugged straight into the wall outlet?

Something's telling me that the PSU itself has problems if those SpeedFan numbers are accurate, but it never hurts to rule out PSU whine from a choppy UPS inverter.
>> No. 9272
Not using a UPS, thanks for the idea though.
Using Knoppix the noise is pretty much gone, but it occasionally starts up for a minute or so and is LOUD.
I mean, it sounds like it might explode, or catch aflame.
Sooooo, if I RMA it, do I have to pay like $15 shipping back?
Might just effing buy a new one.
>> No. 9289
Using a tripping program that fully utilizes my CPU and graphics card, the voltage is 12.74V
hmmm
there's still a whine though

For some reason in my apartment I can't connect to the 99chan irc network. I don't think it's ever worked in the past 6 months I've lived in this apartment, but it worked on the same computers when I lived somewhere else. It still doesn't work on my laptop even after reformatting and installing a different OS. My roommate says he CAN connect, on the same internet connection but different ethernet outlet. I have no fucking idea what this could be. Please help me.

Do you have windows firewall enabled? You might have to add the IRC client your using to the exceptions list, as well as the ports. Do the same for your router if you have one.
>> No. 9288
>>9287
I'm using ubuntu. I have a router, but when I just plug it straight into the ethernet port it doesn't work either. Awhile ago I messed with the settings and tried to open all the ports etc. to no avail.

The only thing I think this could be is that my ISP or apartment complex has somehow blocked IRC.
