Viruses, Malware and Spyware. A guide to diagnosing, removing, and avoiding them, written with beginners in mind. All software and resources cited here are free and legal.

Think you have a virus?

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
HijackThis is a program that lists important items from your registry, making it much easier to diagnose whether or not you have an infection of some kind. If you can't make heads or tails of the output, you can put each process or registry item into google and see what kind of description and reputation it has. If you are still not sure, you can go to:
http://spywarewarrior.com/index.php
It's a forum dedicated to helping people rid their computers of spyware and other nasties. One of the subforums allows you to post your HijackThis log, and eventually one of the helpers will review it and give you advice on what to do.

Want to get rid of a virus?

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free program that you can use to scan your data for viruses. It's a pretty effective tool.

its possible to do that, yes. however, i would recommend using something like http://sandboxie.com/ for everyday use because it is not intrusive and you can make it only sandbox certain applications.

Hey /india/.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.293841&cm_sp=DailyDeal-_-293841-_-Combo

What do you think of this compyootur build dealio? I'd need a graphics card (hopefully the one in the pic) and an operating system but what about the other hardware? Is it quality for the price? What will the limitations on this build be, if any?
>> No. 8569
Pretty meh system. You can do better even without a combo discount.

AMD generally gets you better bang for you buck. The Intel P55 is very old, it wasn't much meant to handle a newer chip like a Core i5, but it can none the less.

Also, the 'direct PCIe link' that intel touts offers very little to no performance gain over a standard setup, you gain maybe 1 - 3fps.

1.5TB? Really, do you have that much shit?

Can /tech/ recommend a proxy for pidgin/skype other than tor/privoxy?
>> No. 8568
Most proxies are shit unless you pay for them. Most proxies you pay for aren't bad. The only fast proxy I know of is CoDeeN, but that's heavily monitored by the Universities than run it.

/india/ my question is pretty simple. I own a toshiba satellite laptop that came with vista installed on it. Now I want to make the switch to 7, but I have two built in hard drives full of downloaded junk. My question is, if I want to install windows 7, do I have to erase everything off both of my hard drives, or just my main drive? Have some Harley for incentive.
>> No. 8376
You only have to format the drive\partition where you want to install Windows. I take it you haven't split up any of your harddrives into partitions, so you will have to delete one of them.
>> No. 8566
Since you have vista you don't have to format at all, just run the upgrade.

I downloaded a video on RS. Split into 15 parts.
Then I extract, and it's two .avi files of one concert.
What is a good free, virus/malware free ap to make the two files one?

Thanks!

And if possible make the file size smaller too.
>> No. 8562
Easy Video Joiner. Don't know how to make them smaller.

I'd like to purchase a domain name but I guess it's parked. There isn't a website for the domain though, Firefox says "Server not found."

What do I need to do in order to get this domain?
>> No. 8563
Have an enormous fucking wad of money ready and contact the owner or hope they let the registration expire and try to snipe it from the hundreds of other scummy domain resellers out ther who will want to try to grab it as well the instant it goes available again.

Or you could just register an unused one and not have to dick with all that, you knucklehead.

How should we be able to see what you are doing wrong when you havent told us anything about what you have done and tried?

Good point.
I have connectbot and android vnc on the phone.
On the computer I have both ultra and tight vnc, Ideally I would have it working with ultra, just chucked on tight cos it wasn't working. I have an ssh connection (no keys, just password, can't get keys working), with android vnc I'm targetting localhost, and the default(for now) port. with the vnc, getting it to listen on the internal LAN ip interface and the same default port.
As a side problem how would i use key encryption with connectbot and freesshd(the ssh client I'm using)

so i was working on my pc i haven't been able to use/set it up for a long time probably almost a year and i miss the processing power my laptops just can't muster. i know my 80gb sata hard rives are all kinds of fucked up so i got a 200gb and a 250 gb, ever since i plugged them in there has been no video output even when in bios. i have tried taking out the videocard and using the onboard videocard which didn't work until i flashed the bios for some reason then after that nothing...i have tried putting the videocard back in and taking it out again i have tried flashing the bios with the videocard in and out several times and to no avail. i'll be upset if i have to buy parts for it for i am so broke there will be no christmas.
>> No. 8555
There should be a couple pins on the motherboard somewhere that allows you to reset your BIOS to factory default configuration if you haven't fucked it up with all the flashing. If you have, you're likely going to have to contact the motherboard manufacturer for a new BIOS chip... but no guarantees there. There could be so very much wrong with this system, but until you can get it to successfully POST, you'll never know the extent of the damage being dealt with.
>> No. 8557
>>8555 i guess i used the wrong word but that's what i was doing, i was resetting it with the jumper but i think i may have figures out what i the problem, after so long of it not being used i think the plug-ins oxidized the surface so by unplugging everything and plugging it all back in i fixed it. thanks for the help though. looks like i got this one by accident which is sweet.

Ok, I'm using uTorrent and trying to download an iso thats around 6 gb. I have 60+ gb free space on my external HDD but I keep getting failure messages claiming that the torrent files exceed the space available. WTF? Any help would be appreciated.

What distro you using? Most of the major ones (Jewbuntu, Debian, FAILdora, Linux Mint (Ubuntu-AIDS), etc.) come with NTFS3G preinstalled. Those are the ones I've tried, at least. I suck at Linux and have never been able to get full support with Arch. I always fuck it up and Gnome's file browser (I want to say Nautilus) won't go in the drive without root access and then it's a whole bunch of other shit that I don't care to deal with.
>> No. 8551
>>8548
Jewbuntu

I'm going to assume that I failed to properly configure something, or it was a bug at the time I tried it, because I never really repeated the experiment within the last 2 years.
>> No. 8556
>>8551
If I remember right, 6.04 had NTFS support. But I know for a fact that 7.10 had NTFS support.
